Chapter 6 Perception and attention


Research in this area is often concerned with devising hypothetical constructs — things you can't actually see, even if you take someone's brain apart — but are talked about as "real' things. These are devised by making inferences from people's performance on a wide variety of tasks. Terms such as "channels", "pools of resources" and "modules" are simply useful metaphors for what is happening inside your head.


A wide range of methods are used, not just experiments.


Not concerned with "humanness" as such.

Interested in both fixity and change.

Obvious interaction between nature and nurture.
